Survey Finds College Students Worried About Health Coverage

May 1, 2006 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A survey from American Independence Corp found that 88% of college students are concerned about the lack of health insurance coverage between graduation and obtaining their first job.

According to a press release, 78% of survey respondents are highly interested in having insurance during that interim period and 74% are interested in a short-term medical option.

According to the survey, 44% of students currently covered will be dropped from their parents’ insurance upon graduation, the release said. Students reported that 84% of parents are concerned about the health coverage interruption.

Fifty-nine percent of students reported that they expect to be self-reliant and pay for insurance themselves, while 16% would pay in combination with their parents and 16% would have their parents pay.

The survey polled more than 1,300 college students on six campuses across the country.
