SURVEY SAYS: Summer Reading List 2018

Summer is almost officially here.

Law week, I asked NewsDash readers, “What books or other publications do you plan to read this summer?”

The reader looking forward to recommendations from the survey may be a little disappointed. Many responding readers listed genres instead of specific books—mysteries, spy novels, self-help, and true crime. Some only cited certain authors—Lee Childs, Nevada Barr, Tami Hoag, David Baldacci, Alice Hoffman and Phillipa Gregory.

Specific books mentioned, include:

  • East of Eden by John Steinbeck, which is the choice for my book club and I plan to continue with the Gabriel Allon series by Daniel Silva by reading the English Spy.
  • Ready to Run by Dr. Kelly Starrett
  • Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance and The Last Resort by Douglas Rogers
  • 12th Edition – Retirement Plans, and CEBS Edition – Retirement Plan Investing Essentials
  • Win Bigly by Scott Adams
  • Outlander series
  • Factfulness, which the respondent said is essential reading today.

In verbatim comments left by readers, some talk about the benefits of reading, some discuss how they read (books on CD, Kindle, actual books). A couple mentioned why they read not just during the summer. Editor’s Choice goes to the reader who said: “Need fun reading that teaches me.”

A big thank you to all who participated in the survey!

Ya gotta disconnect sometimes. Nothing does that like a great, page-turning mystery!

I spend 2.5 hours each day commuting to/from work. My local library, and its collection of books on cd are a lifesaver. I seek out books with lots of action to keep me awake on my commute!

I didn’t intend to have to study over the summer but the delay of the release of the RPA 2 materials has forced my hand. At least I can study outside when it is beautiful weather!

Need fun reading that teaches me.

I take public transportation to the office, so I read all year round

The beauty of Kindle Unlimited is that I can read as many books as I want for free and I can decide if it will be self-help, educational or for pleasure based on my mood!

With any luck, I might be able to read a book for pleasure during a vacation in late August!

Summer is about being outdoors, exploring and creating your own adventure – I use the cold dreary winter nights to snuggle up with the books.

Isn’t it funny sometimes where it’s “summer reading” but we barely have time to read period with our busy lives. It really forces us to say, put down the phone and read a book, go outside…just enjoy.

Light, fun, maybe a little sexy, that’s what I like in summer reading
