One of the unique things about 403(b) plans is the potential for individual annuity contracts with legacy vendors. Justin Londergan, a partner in Ardea Fiduciary Advisors, says recordkeepers need an awareness of the issues presented by legacy vendor contracts and offer some sort of solution for them. When looking for a recordkeeper, 403(b) plan sponsors should also think carefully about fees, investment options, investment availability and opportunities for participant engagement, Londergan says. “403(b) [sponsor]s should look for a partner to help them, along with their adviser, decide what features are best for their particular plans.”—Rebecca Moore
