The Hartford Offers Future Housing Education Resource

June 21, 2011 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – The Hartford has launched Home for a Lifetime, an education resource designed to encourage consumers to think through future housing needs.

The resource outlines the following four step plan of action:

  • Assess your home to determine your current and future lifestyle needs.
  • Think about “the three Rs” – relationships, region and resources when considering how and where you want to live.
  • Explore universal design options that are adaptable, easy and open:
    • Is your home flexible enough to meet the needs of all ages?
    • Can the features of the space be easily adjusted?
    • Are features in your home easy to use?
    • Is there ample room to maneuver or use the features in the room?
  • Create a plan to achieve your goals.

Based on the Home for a Lifetime research, which found that 50% of boomers want to stay in their current home as they age, but most have no plans in place (see Boomers not Considering Future Housing Needs), The Hartford produced two free guidebooks, “Modern Ideas, Modern Living” and “Simple Solutions” that provide practical tips and information on how to develop a housing plan.

The guidebooks are available to download or order at www.thehartford.com/lifetime.
