1841 and 1881

Martin Van Buren was President until March 4, 1841 when William Henry Harrison took office as the new President. Harrison died April 6, 1941, and Vice President John Tyler became the President.

Rutherford B. Hayes, who decided not to seek reelection in 1880, was President until March 4, 1881, when he was succeeded by James Garfield. Garfield’s presidency lasted just 200 days—from March 4, 1881, until his death on September 19, 1881, as a result of being shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau on July 2.
