Workplace Rated "V" For Violence

July 11, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) Over a quarter of US workers lack confidence in their employers ability to guard against workplace violence, a survey reveals.

Of the 1,000 American adults surveyed by the Employment Law Alliance,

  • some 27% said their employers are ill-prepared to deal with threats of violence in the workplace,
  • a slightly higher percentage were confident that their employer could in deal with threats of violence,
  • more than one in 10 said that either they or a co-worker had personally experienced workplace violence, and
  • almost two thirds supported immediate termination of employees who engage in threats of violence.

The overwhelming majority believes they are safe at work, but are still concerned about a dearth of planning to prevent or respond to workplace violence.

These feelings were more pronounced among women, older workers and part-time workers.
