"Off" Time Isn't Offline For Many

May 27, 2003 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - More than a quarter (28%) of managers are planning to take more vacation time this year than last, according to a new survey - but they may not be really getting "away."

According to a new survey conducted by the American Management Association, more than half (58%) will take the same time off, while 14% will have fewer days off this summer.

Still, while they plan to take an average of 8.5 days off, nearly half (44%) of those surveyed are required to provide their offices with their itineraries and/or contact phone numbers while on vacation, compared with 40% a year ago. And while just 17% are required to check in while away, nearly two-thirds (64%) say they will be in contact with their offices at least once a week – and a quarter say they will be touching base every day.

While they are out, 40% plan to conduct some office-related work, up from 36% last summer, and nearly 17% will be in touch with clients or customers at least once a week while away on vacation, up from 16% in 2002.

AMA surveyed 417 executive members and corporate customers from May 8-16, 2003, on their vacation plans between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
