TRIVIAL PURSUITS The story in today's NewsDash about the tie between mustaches and facial hair reminds me of an interesting factoid about American presidents and facial hair.

Who was the last U.S. President to sport facial hair (other than a 5 o'clock shadow)?

Answer

The only presidents with mustaches were Teddy Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, and William Taft , with Taft being the last (1912).

On the other hand, only five presidents in U.S. history have had beards when they moved to the White House -- none in the past century. Benjamin Harrison , who took office in 1889, was the most recent.

There may be a reason - in 1944 and then again in 1948, mustached Thomas Dewey twice tried - and twice failed - to win the presidency (to my recollection, the last serious candidate to have any facial hair other than a 5 o'clock shadow - if I've missed one, email me atnevin.adams@plansponsor.com) .
