Average Weekly Earnings Drops in May

June 14, 2006 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Real average weekly earnings fell by 0.7% after seasonal adjustment from April to May 2006, according to the latest data from the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

A BLS news release said a 0.1% increase in average hourly earnings partially offset a 0.3% decrease in average weekly hours and a 0.5% increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).

Average weekly earnings rose 4% from May 2005 to May 2006. After deflation as a result of the CPI-W, average weekly earnings decreased by 0.2%.

Before adjustment for inflation, average weekly earnings were $ 559.08 in May 2006, compared with $ 543.42 in May 2005.
