BONUS SURVEY SAYS: What is "Your Song?"
This week, I asked readers what’s “your song? – and why that particular selection had been made. Well, while the reasons are surely as variable and “complex” as the couples for whom a particular song is “special”, in order to try and provide some “structure”, I actually offered some possible reasons. Among those, for just over a quarter (26%) it happened to be the song playing during their first dance, while nearly as many (24%) said simply that “it reminds us of…us.”
Among the other responses:
8% said “we just like it”, while
4% said it was playing during their first date
And 2% said it was “playing the first time we…” (I’ll let you fill in your own individual blanks).
That said, a “robust” 36% found those choices too limiting, opting for “other” – and for good reason…
Here’s a sampling:
I like the song and given my romantic track record . . .
No, I'm not kidding, La Bamba really is "our: song. When my husband and I were dating, this song seemed to be playing everywhere we went (in stores when shopping, eating in restaurants, even standing in an elevator.). Neither of us like the song, and it turned into a running joke. Now everytime we hear it, we look at each other and burst out laughing!!
I sang Because to my fiancee when we were dating. She must have like it. We've been married almost 32 years.
It tells our story. 18 years and no regrets. <3 🙂
It is appropriate (the Beatles “Yesterday”)
We danced to in St. Martin, played by a reggae band.
I played that song the day before I asked her out the first time
My boyfriend and I just had our first fight. We had the radio on while we were talking things out and this beautiful song we never heard before came on. The lyrics were about how nothing (from old age to World War III) would stand in between love for one another. I'm glad we made up after that fight.... this was the first song we danced to as Husband & Wife!
I like the song. So I declared it 'our song' and he said, "Yes, dear."
She's an ABBA fan. Well, nobody's perfect.
However, among that group of “others”, roughly a third revolved around weddings:
Our wedding Theme song
Our wedding song, 30 years ago this September
And for some of those “others”, it was both a wedding AND another key occasion:
He sang it to me on our first date, and it was our first dance at our wedding.
Danced to it the night we met; it was our first dance at our wedding.
It was our song and the first dance at our wedding.
Even for the reader who was this week’s “Editor’s Choice” with his comment, “It's the song that we would have danced to at our wedding....had I remembered to bring the cd.”
Thanks to everyone who participated in our survey! I hope you enjoy the choices submitted by readers on the pages that follow – who knows, you may find one – or find yours!
