If confirmed by the Senate, Utgoff would then head the Labor Department office that collects closely watched data on employment, inflation and productivity.
Most recently, Utgoff was director of the Center for Naval Analyses, which oversees personnel, training, medical issues and environmental analysis.
She has also worked as chief economist and partner at Groom and Nordberg, a Washington, D.C., law firm, executive director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. and senior economist at the Council of Economic Advisers.
She has an undergraduate degree from California State University, Northridge, and a PhD from UCLA.
