Demand for Some IT Jobs Still Brisk

June 26, 2008 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A new report by a Boston-based staffing company indicates certain IT workers remain in high demand and that there is a limited talent pool for those technology functions.

A news release from Veritude said only 4% of HR and IT executives surveyed expect their technology headcount to drop this year, while 43% said there will be no change and 53% anticipate a 2008 staffing hike. Among those expecting to go out into the market for new talent, 77% of those jobs are “permanent” positions.

“Despite recent economic woes across many industries, we are finding that IT jobs are still in high demand with employers continuing to forecast steady growth of IT staffing levels,” said Kate Donovan, senior vice president, Veritude, in the announcement. “Many earlier advances in IT were in automating tasks and basic programming. Now employers need onsite IT professionals who can contribute at a strategic level in using IT to achieve and sustain competitive advantages.”

Most sought after, according to Veritude research, are those that can fill IT jobs with higher-level business intelligence and enterprise solutions support. In addition, respondents indicated that the two top IT hiring challenges they face are finding qualified candidates (53%) and finding specific skills (40%).

Forty percent of respondents who expect to increase their IT ranks also said they will work with an outside staffing provider to meet their needs.

Veritude conducted an online survey in May 2008 of mostly human resources and IT managers responsible for hiring IT candidates and received 122 responses.
