DoL Launches New Timesheet App to Track Wages

June 7, 2011 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The United States Department of Labor (DoL) has released a new smartphone application, the DoL Timesheet, that will allow employees to track their hours independently of their employer’s time records.

According to law firm Poyner Spruill, the launch marks another step in the DoL’s efforts to increase enforcement of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and enables employees to determine for themselves the wages owed to them for hours worked. The DoL has stated that the application is available in English and Spanish, and can track regular work hours, break times, and overtime for multiple employers. The DoL Timesheet will also link employees to the DoL Web site, where they can find information about their rights under the FLSA and about how to file wage and hour complaints against their employers.  

The law firm said the application is currently only compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch; however, the DOL has been exploring updates that will allow the application to be used with other smartphones, such as the Android and BlackBerry. For workers without smartphones, the DoL has released a printable calendar that may be used to track rates of pay and work hours, and which also provides information about employee rights under the FLSA and how to file a complaint with the DOL.  

In response to criticism that claims the timesheet will only encourage meritless wage disputes, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis has commented that the new application will “ensure that workers receive the wages to which they are entitled.”
