Dominguez Takes a Seat at the EEOC

August 10, 2001(PLANSPONSOR.com) ? The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the body charged with setting equal employment opportunity policy and approving litigation, officially has a new chairperson.

After being nominated by President George Bush in May (see Bush to Nominate EEOC Head ), and unanimously confirmed by the Senate in July, Cari M. Dominguez has been sworn into the top spot on the five-member commission.

Term Limit

Succeeding Ida L. Castro, who assumed the role in 1998 and whose term on the Commission expires in 2003, Dominguez will serve as chief executive officer of the EEOC, her term expiring in July 2006.

The other two members of the EEOC, commissioners of which are appointed for staggered terms of five years, are Vice Chair Paul M. Igasaki and Commissioner Paul Steven Miller. The remaining seat is vacant, along with the position of General Council.

Background

Previously Dominguez held senior positions at two executive search firms, Heidrick & Struggles, where she was a partner, and Spencer Stuart where she was a director.

She has also served as Assistant Secretary for Employment Standards and as Director of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs at the Department of Labor.

Dominguez holds BA and MA degrees from the American University?s School of International Service in Washington DC, and is a Fellow of the Advanced Study Program in Public Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
