EEOC Sues Company for Discrimination Against Employee with Post-Partum Depression
December 27, 2011 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is suing a power grid operator for firing an employee with post-partum depression.
Reported by Tara Cantore
Midwest ISO, a Carmel, Indiana-based power grid operator is accused of discriminating against and firing an employee who suffered from post-partum depression, a condition she made known to the company. The employee requested some leave time to help deal with her condition, but the company refused, reports the EEOC.
The EEOC filed the lawsuit against Midwest ISO after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process.
“This company could easily have prevented this situation by working toward a reasonable accommodation, which it was legally obliged to do,” said Laurie A. Young, EEOC regional attorney for the Indianapolis District Office.
