Employer Guidelines to Reduce BO Raise a Stink in UK

UK’s The Times reports that the guidelines on personal hygiene and attire were published in a booklet entitled “Corporate Wear Collection” and handed to bus drivers last week along with new uniforms. The rules include such things as keeping hands and nails in good condition, keeping shoes and clothing clean, and even what type of watch to wear.

However, according to the news report, the rule causing a stink among the bus drivers states, “You must wash regularly, wear a clean shirt daily and use deodorant.” One driver railed, “- this is the way adults speak to little children.”

Local transport pressure groups said they were surprised by the guidelines, and drivers were urged to ignore them. David Caller, the local chairman of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, said the company puts out such things occasionally and it was best to just wait and see what enforcement actions the company takes.

A spokesperson for First Bus said the advice was necessary, but conceded it may have been over the top. He said the company would be upset if any drivers felt it was inappropriate.
