Ergonomic Initiatives Aid Nursing Home Injuries

April 18, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The first industry-specific guidelines to reduce ergonomic-related injuries and illnesses will be developed for nursing homes, the US Department of Labor (DoL) announced.

Workers in this field often suffer from back injuries and other ergonomic-related problems, officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) say.

Representatives from the field have agreed to work with the OSHA to develop a draft for public comment later this year that will be published in the Federal Register before becoming final, according to DoL officials.

OSHA announced its comprehensive plan to dramatically reduce ergonomic injuries earlier in the month (see DoL to Unveil Ergonomic Guidelines ).

In addition to industry-and-task-specific guidelines, the plan includes

  • tough enforcement measures
  • workplace outreach
  • advanced research
  • efforts to protect Hispanic and other immigrant workers.
