Hartford Adds Genetic Testing Discrimination Protection

June 7, 2005 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. has adopted an endorsement for its Employee Practice Liability (EPL) policies covering employers from allegations of discrimination based on genetic testing.

The new endorsement is part of the insurer’s stand-alone policies for larger companies and EPL policies that are part of its Private Choice Encore! management liability package, Hartford said in a news release.

“Businesses buy EPL insurance with the expectation that it will provide protection against allegations of discriminatory employment practices, but employment laws are changing every day,” said Paul Sullivan, vice president at The Hartford’s Hartford Financial Products division, in the news release.

Hartford’s EPL Genetic Makeup Endorsement amends the definition of wrongful act to include discrimination based on an individual or group’s genetic makeup, or discrimination based on an individual’s refusal to submit to genetic testing.
