Hazard Communication Violations Top OSHA 'Top 10' List

December 3, 2003 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Just like David Letterman, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has its own "Top 10" list - in this case containing the most frequently cited workplace safety violations.

Leading the General Industry list for FY 2003, according to Business and Legal Reports, was Hazard Communication with 7,009 violations and $1.32 million in penalties, up from 6,951 violations and $1.24 million in penalties in 2002.

Rounding out the violations list were (in order):

Control of Hazardous Energy, Lockout/Tagout – 4,681 violations and $4.21 million in penalties
Respiratory Protection – 4.130 violations and $1.21 million in penalties
General Requirements for Machines – 3,495 violations and $3.78 in penalties
Electrical: Wiring Methods, Components, and Equipment for General Use – 3,211 violations and $1.31 million in penalties
Powered Industrial Trucks – 2,858 violations and $1.78 million in penalties
Bloodborne Pathogens – 2,508 violations and $1.27 million in penalties
Electrical Systems Design, General Requirements – 2,303 violations and $1.29 million in penalties
Mechanical Power-Transmission Apparatus – 2,281 violations and $114,9325 in penalties
Personal Protective Equipment General Requirements – 1,883 violations and $1.31 million in penalties.
