House to Consider Pay Discrimination Claims Bills

January 6, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A U.S. House Democratic leader said the chamber would take up two bills Friday dealing with pay discrimination, including one designed to reverse a much-followed U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) revealed the plans during a media briefing about the upcoming legislative schedule for the latest recently convened session, Reuters said.

The  Reuters news report said the bill intended to counteract the Supreme Court ruling, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, was blocked in the U.S. Senate last year.

In mid-2007, the House approved the Ledbetter bill that would effectively strip the time limits on when workers can sue for pay discrimination, rolling back the recent court’s ruling validating a 180-day statute of limitations (see  U.S. House Passes Measure Lifting Pay Lawsuit Time Limit ).
