HR Comp Reflects Companies' Value of HR Role

June 21, 2007 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Salary.com has released the results of its annual survey on compensation for human resource professionals.

According to a Salary.com press release, the 2007 Human Resources Compensation Survey found the median annual base salary for HR managers is $78,800. Median annual base salaries for other job titles included:

  • Top HR Executive – $200,000
  • HR Director – $105,600
  • HR Generalist II – $52,700
  • Personnel Records Clerk – $27,800

“While the salaries for most HR jobs have grown at a predictable rate that is consistent with the overall growth in compensation, the salaries paid to Top HR Executives have increased considerably faster. This trend reflects the importance that top leadership places on managing their organizations’ human resources,” said Joe Kilmartin, director of compensation at Salary.com, in the press release.

The survey found salaries vary widely across geographies. For HR Managers, the top regions for salary were New York ($92,100 median annual base salary), Massachusetts ($82,400), and Minnesota ($80,800). North Carolina ($72,500), Ohio ($67,300), and Pennsylvania ($66,800) ranked on the bottom of the list. The national median target bonus for HR Manager is 10%.

Results indicated compensation for HR professionals varies across industries as well, with the finance and insurance industry paying its HR Managers $94,400 (20% higher than the national median), and the health care and social assistance industry paying $70,800 (11% lower than the national median) and public administration industry paying $72,800 (8% lower).

The survey report includes pay data from more than 360 organizations for 115 human resource job titles broken out by industry, geographic location, type of organization, and size of organization in terms of number of employees and annual revenue.
