IT Pay Up Only Slightly in 2003

October 28, 2003 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - IT paychecks for 2003 continue to be impacted by economic pressures with base pay figures showing a slight increase over 2002 for 63% of respondents to a new survey.

The survey by Computerworld also found that bonuses remained stagnant as 71% of workers said there had been no change in their expected year-end bonuses this year.

The average IT pay increase was 6.7%, while 29% of IT workers saw no change in their base wage, and 9% reported a loss, the survey found. Although the number of respondents suffering pay cuts this year is smaller – 8% compared to 9.5% last year – this year’s group was forced to forfeit the same amount as last year – 13%.

According to the survey, despite modest pay raises and halted bonuses, more than half of the IT professionals surveyed are satisfied with their overall compensation, while only 22% are dissatisfied.

Job titles showing the most generous salary hike included director/vice president of networks with an average 6.8% uptick and e-commerce managers with a 4.6% rise. Of those respondents who had a decrease in pay, quality assurance specialists and technicians lost the most ground in 2003 with a 5.5% and 2.8% decrease, respectively.

The survey data was compiled between in May 2003 with an online survey and a printed questionnaire. The poll covered nearly 15,000 IT workers.
