Lesbian Teacher in UK Gets Award After Paternity Leave Denial

April 9, 2007 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A lesbian teacher in the U.K. was awarded £20,000 in compensation in a suit that claimed she was denied paternity leave when her partner had a baby, a recent annual report by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) said.

According to the Daily Mail, the woman taught at a Roman Catholic school in East London. When she requested leave to assist with the birth of her partner’s child, she was told by the school that “her lifestyle was unacceptable and that if she didn’t find another job immediately, she would be dismissed,” the newspaper reported.

The NUT represented her in the case, which accused the school of breaching sexual orientation, paternity and adoption leave regulations.

The school settled before the tribunal began, the newspaper reported.
