Merrill Expands Retirement Services Leadership

January 23, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Despite a financial crunch that has brought about some 15,000 layoffs - and a first quarter loss of $1.26 billion, Merrill Lynch has just expanded the executive suite of its retirement-services business.

Newly tapped executives are:

  • Jim Cooper, chief financial officer. Cooper joined Merrill in December from Wamaco Inc. where he served as CFO.
  • John Rowe, director of retirement sales. Prior to Merrill, Rowe was senior vice president at American Express where he was responsible for client acquisitions in the mid and large sized defined contribution plan markets.
  • Michael Muirhead, director of consulting relations and sales support. He joins Merrill from Cigna Retirement Plan Services where he was a vice president within the consulting relations group.

The company also promoted Cynthia Hayes to be director of institutional marketing.
