Milwaukee Voters to Replace County Exec

April 30, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Voters in the Milwaukee area were going to the polls Tuesday to select a new Milwaukee County executive to replace the former chief who resigned in the wake of a pension scandal.

The winner of Tuesday’s balloting will replace Thomas Ament, who stepped down in February as part of a government shakeup after plans to give several county officials million-dollar pensions became public.

The November 2000 plan would have allowed the $1-million lump-sum payments on top of the officials’ regular monthly pensions. Ament would have been eligible for a $2.3-million payment.

Ament has said he did not know the payouts would be so high, and he agreed recently not to collect the higher benefits himself
