Modern Workplaces: A Den of Stiff Competition?

August 14, 2008 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Employees are more hotly competitive with each other today than a decade ago, a new survey found.

Some 46% of senior executives polled in a recent survey by staffing firm OfficeTeam said they see that competitive drive in their workforce.

Asked whether their current workers are more competitive than employees from 10 years ago, respondents said they were:

  • significantly more competitive, 12%
  • somewhat more competitive, 34%
  • no different, 24%
  • somewhat less competitive , 23%
  • significantly less competitive, 3%

“In an uncertain economy, people grow more concerned about job security and proving their worth to employers,” said Dave Willmer, executive director of OfficeTeam, in a press release. “This pressure to perform may result in rivalries between employees.”

The study was conducted by an independent research firm and developed by OfficeTeam. The survey is based on telephone interviews with 150 senior executives from the largest companies in the United States.
