Most Americans Online Now
The poll (conducted by telephone) of 2,062 U.S. adults found that 79% of adults are now online, compared with 77% in February/April 2006, 74% in February/April 2005, 66% in the spring of 2002, 64% in 2001 and 57% in Spring of 2000. Only 9% were online in 1995. The proportion of adults who are now online at home has risen to 72% from 70% a year ago, while the percentage online at work is about half that (37%, compared with 35% last year). Harris notes that while it remains true that more young than older people, and more affluent than low-income people, are online – but 9% of those online are now age 65 or over (compared to 16% of all adults who are 65 or over).

Just under three-quarters (72%) of Americans have registered their telephone numbers for the “Do-Not-Call Registry”, and of those that have registered, only 6% say they get as many calls now as before they did, and a mere 1% said they get more. However, while 18% report that they currently get no telemarketing calls – three in five (59%) say they still get some, just not as many, according to a Harris Poll of 2,565 U.S. adults aged 18 or over surveyed online. Nearly three-quarters know that the “Do-Not-Call Registry” expires and they will have to renew their registration (29% don’t).
