Music Still the Top Choice for Passing Work Commute Time

April 25, 2011 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – The “Road Wage” survey by The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated found listening to music is still the number one work commute activity.

Seventy-six percent of employed adult commuters said they listen to music on the radio or their own listening device while traveling to or from work. Twenty-two percent enjoy the quiet time; 18% talk on the phone or text; and 11% talk to their fellow passengers.

Only 7% of respondents indicated they read a book or magazine, while 4% do work.

According to a press release, despite various initiatives to encourage more environmentally friendly commuting practices, the vast majority of adults who commute to work (83%) still travel to work by car alone. Eleven percent use public transportation; 10% walk; and 9% carpool.

The “Road Wage” survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Kronos within the U.S. between March 2 and 4, 2011, among 2,042 adults (ages 18 and over), of whom 1,077 commute to work.
