Nearly Half of Employers Block Shopping Web Sites
December 3, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – Forty-eight percent of chief information officers (CIOs) interviewed by Robert Half Technology said they block access to online shopping sites; another 34% said they allow access but monitor activity for excessive use.
Reported by Fred Schneyer
A Robert Half news release about the survey said 14% of respondents allow unrestricted Internet access and 4% don’t know their policy. The CIOs whose companies allow shopping estimate employees spend an average of three hours per week doing so.
“Many companies monitor computer use, and excessive shopping is a red flag that could put someone’s job at risk,” said John Reed, executive director of Robert Half Technology, in the news release “Even if employers allow online shopping, employees should use good judgment and not abuse the privilege.”
The survey was conducted by an independent research firm and is based on telephone interviews with more than 1,400 CIOs from companies across the United States with 100 or more employees.
