New York Teachers’ Retirement System Will Not Release Pensioner Data

According to the Democrat and Chronicle, the retirement fund made the decision based on a ruling by the New York state appeals court in October. The court ruled a New York City police pension fund was off limits to the public.

According to the news report, John Cardillio, a spokesperson for the teachers’ retirement systems, said the October court ruling found a retirement system is not required to disclosure the names and addresses of its’ retirees. “Therefore, we are unable to provide pension information that in any way would directly or indirectly identify such person as a retiree,” said Cardillio.

The New York state Teachers’ Retirement System includes approximately 145,000 retirees and has nearly 300,000 active members. The retirement system said it will still continue to release the names of current teachers and their salaries, but not the retirees.
