Parting Gift: Bush Gives Federal Workers Extra Holiday

December 12, 2008 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - President Bush has issued an Executive Order giving federal employees an extra holiday this year.

According to the order issued on December 12, “All executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Friday, December 26, 2008, the day after Christmas Day.”

Section 2 of the order gives heads of executive branch departments and agencies the discretion to determine if certain employees must report for duty the day after Christmas “for reasons of national security or defense or public need.”

Under Bush’s order, December 26, 2008, shall be considered as falling within the scope of Executive Order 11582 issued on February 11, 1971, “Observance of holidays by Government agencies.”
