Peach State Lawmakers Reveal Darfur Pension Divestment Measure
January 20, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The state of
Georgia will join a group of other states in divesting its
public retirement assets from companies with Sudan-related
investments - at least if two Georgia lawmakers have their
way.
Reported by Fred Schneyer
The Associated Press reported thatDemocratic State Representative Tyrone Brooks and Republican Representative Wendell Willard, both of Atlanta, are sponsoring the bill in the Georgia House.
The measure would forbid the investment of public retirement system funds in companies that do business with or in Sudan. It also would divest any such investments currently held by a public retirement system by July 1, 2011, according to the report.
More than 200,000 people have died and millions have been chased from their homes in Darfur amid conflict between ethnic African rebels and the Arab-dominated Sudanese government.
