Pension Reform Dies – For Now
December 8, 2000 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Republican
leaders have decided to postpone pursuing passage of pension
reform proposals, until after the anticipated election of
Texas Governor George W. Bush.
Reported by editors@plansponsor.com
The bill (H.R. 2614) would have raised the amount of money people could contribute to tax-favored retirement savings accounts as well as provide some breaks for people who pay for their own health insurance costs.
By waiting until the next session, Congress can preserve funds that may be needed to fund Bush’s promised tax cuts.
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott still expects the 106th Congress to finish the budget as well as a measure to restore some $30 billion in Medicare funds to health care providers by the end of next week.
