Senate Confirms Silverman for EEOC

March 6, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Senate confirmed Leslie Silverman to a Republican seat on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Silverman served as labor counsel of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee from 1997 until 2001. Prior to that, she was a litigation and employment associate for the firm of Keller and Heckman in Washington, DC.

The five-year terms on the commission expire on a staggered basis and Silverman will serve the remainder of a term expiring July 1, 2003.

Silverman’s confirmation still leaves one Republican seat open on the five-member commission – the others are filled by:

  • Chairwoman Cari Dominguez, a Republican
  • Vice Chairman Paul Igasaki,a Democrat
  • Commissioner Paul Steven Miller, a Democrat.

The Senate is yet to act on the President Bush’s nomination of Naomi Churchill Earp, a former commission aide, whom the President wants designated as vice chairwoman once she is confirmed.

President Bush also put Donald Prophete’s name forward as the EEOC’s general counsel. Prophete is an employment lawyer for the Sprint Corp. in Kansas City.
