SHRM Poll Finds Widespread Resume Inaccuracies

August 31, 2004 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Sixty-one percent of the human resource (HR) professionals contacted in a recent survey said they have found inaccuracies in résumés after carrying out background checks.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently conducted two separate online surveys on résumé inaccuracies, asking how often hiring managers found accuracy issues:

  • 6% said often
  • 55% said sometimes
  • 27% said rarely
  • 2% said never
  • 9% said we do not investigate backgrounds of potential employees.

SHRM’s polling also found that 86% of HR professionals surveyed said resume accuracy was either very important or important in their decision to extend a job offer:

  • 47% said very important
  • 39% said important
  • 8% said we do not investigate the background of jobs candidates
  • 4% said we have not found any inaccuracies in résumés.

The Background Checks/ Résumé Inaccuracies and Résumé Inaccuracies/Hiring online surveys had samples comprised of 373 and 394 HR professionals respectively.
