Some Employees Say "Thank You" is Enough

January 18, 2007 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A simple recognition of a job well done can go a long way in motivating workers, according to a recent survey.

Staffing service provider Accountemps said it found 35% of workers and 30% of chief financial officers (CFOs) polled cited frequent recognition of accomplishments as the most effective non-monetary reward, followed by regular communication, which was chosen by 20% of employees and 36% of CFOs.

Rankings of other non-monetary motivators were:

  • Giving employees increased responsibility, 20% of CFOs and 17% of employees; and
  • Off-site team-building and social events, 8% of CFOs and 17% of employees.

A flexible work schedule and more time off were not citied as significant non-monetary motivations for employees or CFOs.

The survey included responses from more than 1,400 CFOs from a sample of U.S. companies with more than 20 employees and 536 full- or part-time office workers.
