SURVEY SAYS – Do You Still Get a Traditional Newspaper?

May 7, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - As a bonus question this week I asked readers if they (still) subscribed to a traditional newspaper.

Considering the incessant reports of the demise of the traditional paper format, I fully expected a result in this week’s survey that mirrored the impact that declining readerships and advertising have meant at storied newspapers like the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Rocky Mountain News, and Boston Globe.

Of course, no sooner do I “anticipate” a response than the readership of THIS publication proves me wrong.   In fact, a whopping 63.2% said they still subscribe to a traditional paper, while another 15% are subscribing, albeit on something other than a daily basis, and 4.2% don’t subscribe, but do buy it on the newsstand.

Of course, that means that 18.1% don’t subscribe.

I did ask readers which newspaper(s) they subscribe to.   As one might imagine, the geographic dispersion of the audience had an impact here; still, one-in-three specifically noted the Wall Street Journal, and only half that number mentioned the New York Times.   The most commonly cited “also rans” were the Baltimore Sun, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our survey!
