Survey: Senior Citizens Recognize Benefits of Physical Activity

July 16, 2007 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Senior citizens are keeping in shape, with 45% of individuals over the age of 50 saying they consider themselves with above average physical fitness, a recent survey suggests.

According to a press release about a recent survey of 4,500 individuals, 97% of respondents say they are in good, very good or excellent health and 42% say they look and feel better as a result of physical activity.

In terms of the frequency of physical activity,74% of seniors exercise at least three days a week and 33% exercise at least five days a week. Nearly half (46%) have been exercising for more than five years.

Of those polled, half prefer to walk or power walk to get their exercise, and, if given free time to do any physical activity, 39% say they would take a long walk, 47% like to exercise outdoors, 40% prefer working out at home and 43% like to exercise alone.

Of all aspects of their physique, 63% of respondents say they are most concerned with their abs and only 10% said they were most concerned with their hips or bottoms.

Eons conducted the online survey in the U.S. on behalf of Humana and SilverSneakers among Eons members over the age of 50. The survey was conducted from April 18 May 9, 2007
