Survey: Speak Up When Networking

April 21, 2003 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - If you want help from people in the business world, you can't be shy about asking for it, a recent survey found.

Sponsored by Office Team, a staffing company focusing on administrative personnel, the survey found that respondents listed not asking for help when it is needed (37%) as the top networking miscue.

Also on the list of networking mistakes were:

  • not keeping in touch with contacts, 25%
  • not thanking people for their help, 22%
  • burning bridges with past employers, 13%
  • don’t know/no answer, 3%

“In this employment market, every contact counts,” warned Liz Hughes, executive director of OfficeTeam, in a statement. “Building your network is tantamount to building your professional marketability and visibility.” The survey covered 613 employed men and women, 18 years of age or older.
