Telecom Workers' Job Satisfaction Below National Average

June 16, 2006 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - There are lots of long faces these days among workers in the telecommunications industry, and that employee dissatisfaction is broad based.

According to a new survey from the Hay Group Institute, telecommunications workers hold less favorable attitudes than their counterparts in other industry sectors on almost all workplace issues.

Slightly more than half (55%) of telecommunications employees describe themselves as being generally satisfied with their work significantly below the 68% average across all industries.

Compared to workers in other industries, telecommunications workers are the toughest critics of their firm’s service and product quality only 58% of these workers consider their company innovative. Overall, about three-quarters of high-tech workers speak favorably about their company’s products and services, compared to only 61% of telecommunications employees who responded positively.

“While it’s a major area for concern, it’s not surprising that telecom employees are critical of products and services,” Hay Group Insight Senior Consultant Tom Agnew said in the group’s news release. “With the constant upgrades in the industry, employees may be very sensitive to what the market is saying and regularly raising the bar within their areas for improvements and changes.”

Hay Group research found that employees’ trust and confidence in their company’s direction and market orientation are among significant qualitites that reflect employee engagement and commitment.

“Today’s employees recognize that their prospects for continued employment, career development, and advancement are dependent on their companies’ health and stability,” the researchers said in the news release. “Increasingly in charge of their own careers, employees cannot be expected to bind their futures to those of their employers unless they are confident that their companies are well managed and headed in the right direction.”

Hay Group compiled this information from its database of about 1.2 million employees in more than 400 international organizations that represent a variety of key industries.
