Who was Saint Nicholas?
He was a Christian Bishop, born during the third century in the village of Patara in Asia Minor, which is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents died while he was young. Adhering to Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” he used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick and the suffering.
He became known for his generosity to those in need, his love for children and his concern for sailors and ships. See https://www.stnicholascenter.org/who-is-st-nicholas.
Through stories about him, and with the help of the 1820 poem “An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore, he became Santa Claus.
