Work Web Usage Up 23%

July 13, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Usage of the Internet at work increased 23% in the past year, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

The 42.3 million work surfers clocked an average of 43 log-ins per month while at work, up 10% from a year ago. The average user visited 35 sites during June, a 25% jump from a year earlier, and spent 22 hours and 38 minutes online – up nearly 2 hours and 8 minutes from the previous year.

Traffic Patterns

While traffic increased to nearly every Web site category, corporate information sites (such as IBM.com and Cisco.com) rose fastest, up nearly 50% from a year ago.

Financial sites jumped 42%, while online travel sites saw a 31% increase in traffic.

Other popular sites for U.S. workers included telecom and Internet service sites, which experienced a 28% increase in traffic, and special occasion sites, such as greeting card sites, which jumped 27%.

AOL boasted 76.9 million unique visitors, who averaged better than 72 minutes per visit. Yahoo! trailed AOL with 68.1 million visitors, but they averaged a 2 hour/8 minute visit.
