"Young" Image Focus Draws EEOC Suit

December 31, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The federal anti-discrimination agency sued an Orlando-area medical staffing agency for firing a 66-year-old nurse because of her age.

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the age discrimination suit against Maxim Healthcare Services on behalf of Rita Bauman, who had been a clinical supervisor at the firm.  The EEOC claims Bauman was told that she didn’t fit Maxim’s “young” image, according to an Associated Press report.

The EEOC said that despite Bauman’s 1999 promotion to the clinical supervisor job, she never got the salary and benefits given to younger employees who held the same position.

The EEOC wants back pay, benefits, and damages for Bauman, as well as a court order to prevent future discrimination.
