CPI Moderates in June

July 18, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The much-awaited June CPI figure, released today by the Department of Labor, showed US inflation rising by 0.2%, slightly higher than market expectations, but lower that the previous month's 0.4% gain.

Hikes in food, housing and medical care prices were cancelled out to some extent by falling fuel prices, down 0.9% over the month.

This drop, offset by 0.4% spikes in food, housing and medical care, explained the fall from May’s 0.4% increase.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile components such as food and energy prices, lifted by 0.3%, compared with a 0.1% increase in May.

Year-on-year, consumer prices were up 3.2% while core prices increased by 2.7%, well below the 3.6% year-on-year increase seen in last month’s data.
