More Employees Staying Home To Get Work Done

By far, the increase over the previous two years is the greatest since the ITAC – a group that dubs itself the association for advancing work from anywhere – began keeping tabs in 1997. Previously, the group noted increases in the number of people teleworking of 24.1% from 1997 to 1999 and 16.7% from 1999 to 2001, according to the 2003 American Interactive Consumer Survey conducted by the Dieringer Research Group for ITAC.

Additionally, the ITAC found more than four out of 10 (42%) employees teleworkers work from home at least one day per week, and 22% work at home daily or nearly every day.

Similar increases in teleworking – work independent of location – have also been noted for the self-employed. Between 2003 and 2001, teleworking entrepreneurs increased 17.6%. Previously, two-year increases of 3.8%, from 1997 to 1999, and 4.7%, from 1999 to 2001, were recorded.

“This latest research quantifies what we have believed about the growth of teleworking in America,” said Tim Kane, President of ITAC. “As ITAC’s own recent Telework America research on broadband noted, telework is coming of age, as the enabling technology, tools and training become available.”
