Rather Work in a Tree House? One CEO Does

November 17, 2006 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Product design firm Davison Design and Development gives employees choices of working on a pirate ship, in a cave or in a castle, among other places, in its recently opened InventionLand facility.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based InventionLand has 15 departments based on focus, including automotive, outdoors, juvenile, home, toys, and pets, according to a press release and video tour of the workspace. Founder and CEO George Davison III, who developed InventionLand “to inspire creative people,” points out in the video that employees can more creatively design car parts of tomorrow in the facility’s own motor speedway.

Davison himself spends most of his time in Thinktank Treehouse, a workspace suspended on a large faux tree above a stream fed from a waterfall in the rear of the environment, the press release said. The workspaces include offices, and InventionLand is part of the firm’s factory which produces product samples, develops prototypes, and constructs products.

“Get creative people out of cubes,” said Davison, in the press release. “[InventionLand] was built to move belief out of the intangible mental realm and into the physical world. If you’re walking in it and living in it, it’s easier to be creative. It’s more than a place; it’s a state of mind.”

Davison said in the video his facility is inspiring so much creativity that the factory produces around 200 new products per month.
