Schwab Expands Institutional Equity Staff

April 21, 2003 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - In a move to expand its institutional equities trading and sales operations, Schwab Capital Markets LP, a unit of Charles Schwab Corp, has hired 12 more people to support its business.

The additions were necessary due to Schwab’s institutional equities operations increasing 250% in the past year.   Thus the company hired additional staff to support listed trading, sales trading and over-the-counter trading areas, according to a news release.

Joseph Mecane, 31, was named vice president and chief operating officer of the equities division, reporting to Executive Vice President of Equities Larry Leibowitz.  Mecane joins Schwab from Knight Trading Group, where he served for five years in various roles, including chief operating officer and chief financial officer of the NASDAQ Division.

In listed trading, Angelo Antonucci, 42, was appointed vice president and head floor broker of Schwab Capital Markets’ operations at the New York Stock Exchange, and John O’Neill, 36, as senior listed trader, both reporting to Thomas Limerick, senior managing director and head of institutional listed trading, who joined the firm in January after 20 years at Bear, Stearns & Co. Bear, Stearns is also where Antonucci and O’Neil came from, where they both served as senior managing directors.

Hired for over-the-counter trading are Richard Striefler, 39, vice president, senior institutional trader and sector head OTC trading, reporting to Leibowitz; and John Comerford, 34, vice president and head of quantitative trading and research in electronic program trading. Both came from SG Cowen where Striefler was a managing director and Head OTC Trader for the past 12 years and O’Hara was a block trader for the past two years.

James Reidy, 37, and James Smith, 34, were named senior sales traders while Jerry Filippini, 40; John Friebely, 31; Seth Gollin, 28; Leucio Iacobelli, 38, were hired as traders. John Comerford, 34, becomes vice president, head of quantitative trading and research.   He will be reporting to Leslie Durschinger and was a portfolio manager at Symphony Asset Management since 1994.
