Middle Mgrs Report Dissatisfaction With Organizations

October 20, 2005 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A survey of middle managers by Accenture found that 48% of respondents this year said they are extremely or very satisfied with their organizations, compared to 67% of middle managers surveyed last year.

According to an Accenture press release, 33% of middle managers describe their organizations as mismanaged. Additionally, only 28% rated the way their organizations manage prospects for advancement as good or excellent, and only 31% said their companies were good or excellent at helping them communicate bad news.

In line with the fact that only about a third of respondents rated their company as good or excellent at managing each of four key elements, the most frustrating aspects of their jobs cited by middle managers, according to the release, were:

  • Compensation issues – 47%
  • Balancing work and personal time – 40%
  • Feeling they do the bulk of the work and don’t receive appropriate credit – 38%
  • Having no clear career path – 35%.

Fifty eight percent of middle managers survey said they would consider changing jobs. Thirty percent said they are currently looking for another job, compared to 21% in the last survey. Better pay or benefits (29%), lack of prospects for advancement (22%) and better conditions or job prospects (21%) were the most cited motivations for seeking a new job.

The online survey was conducted in August by International Communications Research on behalf of Accenture, and obtained responses from 225 full-time workers who consider themselves to be middle managers.
